San Diego State tops first Mountain West power poll
1. San Diego State: MW champs have nation’s second-longest winning streak (10). Make it 11 after New Hampshire.
2. Boise State: Offense should be explosive; if defense can handle losses, this could be a big season.
3. Air Force: Falcons have talent on both sides of the ball and will vie for division title, especially with BSU at home.
4. Utah State: Strong running attack will lead potentially prolific offense, which scored 45 in opener vs. Weber State, but defense lost a lot.
5. New Mexico: Defense returns 10 starters and offense will be tough (48 points in opener vs. South Dakota), as always. Division darkhorse?
6. Nevada: James Butler is a great running back, but Wolf Pack graduated six from defensive front seven.
7. Colorado State: Rams have a strong offensive line, solid run game, but only three starters back on D. Friday’s loss to Colorado was embarrassing.
8. San Jose State: Beat one team with winning record last season; QB Kenny Potter is solid.
9. UNLV: Team is trending the right way (beat Jackson State 63-13 in opener), but can close losses turn into wins at historically bad program?
10. Fresno State: Bulldogs could be potent with steady QB play, but roster isn’t nearly as talented as in past. Opener at Nebraska is brutal.
11. Wyoming: Improvement will be slow, but Cowboys have experience and RB Brian Hill.
12. Hawaii: Rebuilding Warriors have tough early slate, already losing to Cal. Next up: at Michigan.
