The Tampa Bay Buccaneers surprisingly fired coach Lovie Smith on Wednesday — creating immediate speculation among NFL media that they plan to hire offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.

Koetter, who was the Boise State head coach from 1998 to 2000, has been considered a candidate for multiple NFL vacancies this year. He reportedly underwent hip surgery Tuesday.

“With Lovie Smith fired I would expect Dirk Koetter to be named head coach within the week,” tweeted Mark Dominik, a former Bucs general manager (2009-13) who works for ESPN. “They still will interview a few other candidates.”

The Bucs were 6-10 this season. Tailback Doug Martin, a former Boise State player, finished second in the NFL in rushing. He is a free agent but has expressed an interest in returning.
