Boise State’s Danielson ignores other jobs, signs his ‘commitment’ to BSU

Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson signed his second contract extension in as many years earlier this week.

The new contract extended Danielson’s commitment to Boise State by a single year, through the 2030 football season, with the terms officially ending on Feb. 28, 2031.

But aside from tacking an extra year to the end of his contract, nothing else changed — his base salary remained the same, his early termination buyouts didn’t change and his annual bonuses were untouched.

So, what was the point?

“I want to show this community, our players, our staff, recruits, that I mean what I say when I say I’m committed here,” Danielson said Tuesday morning.

Danielson prefaced that comment by saying that programs had called him to gauge his possible interest in coaching elsewhere. He said he told them he had no interest in leaving Boise State.

Danielson is entering his 10th season in Idaho’s capital city, having joined the program as a graduate assistant in 2017. Since then, he’s quickly risen through the ranks to coach several defensive position groups before becoming the defensive coordinator in 2021, and then the head coach in 2023 after the firing of Andy Avalos.

In his short time as interim head coach and then in the role officially, Danielson became just one of two coaches in FBS history to win three conference titles in his first three seasons, joining Lincoln Riley, who won three straight with Oklahoma.

But unlike Riley, who decided to move on from the Sooners after five seasons to become USC coach, Danielson is intent on letting everyone know he plans on going nowhere.

“You hear coaches say, ‘I’m committed here,’ and then three months later, they’re leaving for a job,” Danielson said. “And I’m not saying that makes them bad people, but when I say I’m committed here, I want to be here.”

Danielson said he and athletic director Jeramiah Dickey discussed a contract extension as soon as the season ended in mid-December. He signed the contract extension on April 8 ahead of the official announcement on April 20.

“As calls would come, I don’t play games in that space like, I feel like I’m called here,” Danielson said. “I feel like this is exactly where we’re supposed to be.”
