Boise State football loses its third coach in 8 days. This time to an old foe
A third member of the Boise State football coaching staff left the program on Wednesday evening.
Demario Warren has been named BYU’s defensive pass game coordinator and cornerbacks coach. BYU confirmed the appointment when announcing the promotion of Kelly Poppinga to be the Cougars’ defensive coordinator.
Warren joins former Boise State wide receivers coach Matt Miller and safeties coach Tyler Stockton in departing the program in recent days. Miller left to join former Bronco wide receiver Kirby Moore at Washington State on Dec. 31, while Stockton joined the Michigan Wolverines’ staff on Jan. 5.
The departure of Stockton and Warren leaves head coach Spencer Danielson with the task of replacing two secondary coaches. Danielson told reporters at the end of the Broncos’ season, on Dec. 17, that multiple coaches had already received job offers but declined them. The program did not lose any coaches after the 2024 College Football Playoff season.
“Demario is an outstanding coach with great experience in all phases of the game, including six years as the head coach at Southern Utah and a ton of experience coaching defensive backs,” BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said in Wednesday’s press release.
Warren arrived at Boise State in 2022 and spent four seasons with the Broncos, having previously served as the head coach of the Big Sky’s Southern Utah for six seasons.
In his final season with the Broncos, Warren helped build the secondary into boasting the 15th-best pass defense in the nation, allowing just 175.6 passing yards per game. The Broncos pulled in 14 interceptions last season, 10 of which came from cornerbacks.
