‘Your one shot’: Outgoing Boise State football players try to show NFL scouts they belong
For many guys who played on the Boise State football team last season, Wednesday afternoon was one of the biggest days in their careers.
Eleven Broncos with aspirations of playing football at the next level participated in Boise State’s pro day on Wednesday, giving NFL scouts and coaches a final viewing ahead of the NFL Draft on April 24-26. Two previous Boise State players, Billy Bowens and Howard Brown, also participated.
“If you don’t get the (NFL Scouting) Combine invite, this is your one shot,” safety Alexander Teubner said after his workout.
Teubner participated in every workout available Wednesday at the Bleymaier Football Center and Caven-Williams Sports Complex, including the bench press, vertical jump and 40-yard dash. He managed 16 reps on the 225-pound bench press, but numbers weren’t provided for his other workouts.
“This is where I get to showcase. Most of these things, you only get one attempt at,” Teubner said. “So you have to be on your game the moment we start. And I felt I did a good job.”
Only two of the 13 players who participated Wednesday were invited to the NFL combine last month: running back Ashton Jeanty and defensive end Ahmed Hassanein. And because Jeanty didn’t participate in on-field workouts at the combine, representatives from all 32 NFL teams were present at Boise State on Wednesday.
“We might not be able to ride (Jeanty’s) coattails much longer,” Teubner laughed when asked about so many scouts being in attendance. “But no, I love the guy. Happy for him. He deserves the whole world.”
While Jeanty is a likely top-10 pick — and therefore also didn’t partake in several workouts at pro day — Hassanein used Wednesday’s event as one last chance to impress.
Right off the bat, he had teammates and scouts alike on their feet as he managed 34 reps on the bench press. That mark would’ve ranked first at the combine, beating out Cincinnati’s Luke Kandra (33) and far surpassing Hassanein’s mark of 27.
Hassanein said Wednesday that the long days associated with the NFL combine, from early morning starts to team interviews and workouts, were tiring, and it’s part of why he decided to work out at pro day, too.
“You only get the opportunity to do the pro day once and the combine once,” Hassanein said. “So I wanted to make the most out of it.”
Part of the afternoon was also spent outside on The Blue at Albertsons Stadium, where kicker Jonah Dalmas and kickoff specialist Taren Schive worked with NFL coaches. Schive placed multiple kickoffs within the 10-yard line, while Dalmas drilled a 63-yard field goal from the Bronco logo.
Dalmas, a Rocky Mountain High School grad, spent five years at Boise State and is statistically one of the best kickers in program history. The Idahoan described Wednesday as “everything that I had asked for.”
Dalmas said even if his next move isn’t to the NFL, that doesn’t mean his football career will be over.
“I want to have a chance to keep kicking,” Dalmas said. “There are a lot of different resources that are in football now, which is awesome. But it’s always been the ultimate goal to play in the NFL.”
