‘The right person’: Saints hire Kellen Moore as head coach. He’s the youngest in the NFL

The New Orleans Saints moved quickly to lock in former Boise State great Kellen Moore as their next head coach.

Less than 48 hours after winning his first Super Bowl as the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, Moore became the 19th head coach in Saints history.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“I am excited to join the New Orleans Saints and deeply appreciate the faith that (Saints owner Gayle) Benson and the entire Saints organization have placed in me,” Moore said in a news release. “I look forward to embracing the challenges ahead and am eager to get started. I would also like to thank the Philadelphia Eagles for an incredible 2024 season. I’m excited to begin this new chapter.”

In his one season with the Eagles, Moore’s offense averaged the eighth-most yards per game (367.2) in the NFL and ranked No. 7 in points per game (27.2) during the regular season. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley set the NFL’s single-season rushing record with 2,504 total yards rushing, regular season and playoffs combined.

Moore has spent seven seasons in the NFL as a coach, beginning in 2018 as the quarterbacks coach for the Dallas Cowboys. He served as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022, and then spent one season as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers before being hired in Philadelphia.

After becoming the winningest quarterback in college football history — compiling a record of 50-3 at Boise State — Moore went undrafted in 2012. He was picked up as a free agent and for six years was mainly a reserve quarterback with the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys, before retiring following the 2017 season.

Moore started two games in 2015 for the Cowboys, highlighted by a 435-yard passing performance at home against Washington in which he became just the fifth quarterback in Dallas history to surpass 400 yards in a single game.

“At the start of the interview process, it was important to find a head coach who was the right fit for the New Orleans Saints organization,” Benson said in the release. “Through the search process, it became clear that Kellen is the right person to help us re-establish a winning program and culture that our fans are accustomed to and have come to expect.”

At 36, Moore, a native of Prosser, Washington, will be the youngest current coach in the NFL.
