Boise State quickly hires new offensive coordinator. Former Bronco is already on staff
Boise State football announced the hiring of Nate Potter as the team’s new offensive coordinator on Friday morning.
Potter served as the co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach this season, during which Boise State finished 12-2, won a second consecutive Mountain West championship, and earned a first-round bye to the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
According to the material sheet provided by Boise State, Potter will be under contract as the offensive coordinator until Feb. 28, 2027.
Potter’s promotion came the day after offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter announced his retirement on Facebook. Koetter will remain with the program as a senior analyst — the same role he held in 2022 before replacing Tim Plough as offensive coordinator following Plough’s midseason firing.
“I am ... so thankful for Coach Koetter and all that he did for our team this season,” Potter said in a news release. “I am excited that he will continue to be a part of our staff in a senior analyst role going forward.”
Koetter previously said Potter helped call offensive plays throughout the 2024 season, and said he likes what the new offensive coordinator brings to the table.
Potter was inducted into the Boise State Hall of Fame in 2018 after a stellar college career with the Broncos from 2008 to 2011. The offensive tackle was part of the Broncos’ 2010 Fiesta Bowl-winning team and was named a consensus All-American by the Football Writers’ Association of America in 2011. The Arizona Cardinals drafted him in 2012, and he played there for two seasons before retiring and entering coaching.
Potter returned to Boise State in 2014 and served as a quality control assistant and offensive graduate assistant for four years. He then coached at The College of Idaho and Montana State for several years before returning to Boise State in 2022 as the tight ends coach and run game coordinator. He was promoted to co-offensive coordinator in 2024.
“Coach Potter is a rising star in this business,” Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson said in the release. “He truly Bleeds Blue as a Boise State Hall of Famer and one of the best to ever wear the Blue and Orange.
“I’m grateful for him working closely with Coach Koetter this past year and not only learning from one of the best but taking that opportunity to show his ability to lead and direct an offense. I know he is going to continue to make our offense thrive under his leadership and help us make a positive impact on our players’ lives.”
With Potter as the tight ends coach, junior tight end Matt Lauter was the Broncos’ second-leading receiver in 2024, with 47 catches for 619 yards. Potter helped Koetter call an offense that ranked sixth in the nation in scoring and eighth in total yardage.
Potter will earn $460,000 annually on his new contract if it is approved by the State Board, the same salary Koetter earned in the role in 2024. Potter previously earned an annual salary of $260,000.
