This former Boise State star has gig alongside Oscar-winning actress in TV commercial
Former Boise State big man Scott Matlock clearly isn’t afraid to try new things, and even a guy who used to call the quiet streets of Homedale home can’t escape the bright lights of Los Angeles.
Matlock played defensive tackle for most of his career, but he was listed as the Los Angeles Chargers’ starting fullback at the start of the season. Matlock, a stalwart on the defensive line at Boise State, was drafted by the Chargers in the 6th round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Along with his defensive and blocking duties this season, he has made one catch for seven yards.
And now, he’s on TV in uniform in more ways than one, thanks to being a two-way threat — he has played about a third of the Chargers’ offensive snaps as a fullback and about one-fifth of the defensive snaps as a lineman, according to NFL statistics.
On Thursday, CBS released a new commercial featuring Matlock and Academy Award-winning actress Kathy Bates.
In the commercial, two CBS executives talk about needing to find someone “who can protect us, but also find the target and attack,” and “someone who can play offense and defense.”
The pair call Matlock into the room, but it’s not just the football Matlock — Bates accompanies him. Bates is staring in a reboot of the television series “Matlock,” in which she plays the role of an attorney named Madeline “Matty” Matlock who gets a job at a prestigious firm.
The TV show aired its pilot last month, and episode two will be released on CBS, which has been broadcasting NFL games since 1956, on Oct. 17.
A fun back-and-forth happens between Matlock and Bates, in which she says no one does offense and defense better than her, before Matlock asks, “What about special teams coverage?”
After the executives list off numerous NFL teams, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cincinnati Bengals, Bates quickly backs off, saying she’s not “fighting any pirate tigers,” and wishes Matlock luck before walking out the door.
The commercial ends with a brief clip of Matlock looking at a pin-up board you’d often see in a lawyer’s office, as he turns toward the camera.
