Update: Smoke forces Boise State to cancel Saturday watch party at Albertsons Stadium

Boise State University canceled a watch party set for Albertsons Stadium on Saturday as a result of the poor air quality in the Treasure Valley, according to a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The original plan was to show Saturday’s season-opening game at Georgia Southern on the 120-by-50-foot south end zone video board, the largest in the Mountain West Conference. However, the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality forecast unhealthy air quality for Saturday.

As a result, Boise State fans no longer will have a chance to sit on The Blue to watch the game. It is being broadcast on ESPNU. Kickoff is 2 p.m. Mountain time.

When the school announced the watch party on Wednesday, the forecast for Saturday was for temperatures in the low 90s and clear skies. But overnight into Thursday morning, weather shifts blew heavy smoke from Central Idaho fires into the Boise area, causing horrible air quality that’s made it unhealthy to be outside.

“We want Bronco Nation to be together and cheering on the Broncos at any opportunity we can get, and what better way to watch the football team open the season on the road than with friends and family on The Blue!” Boise State Athletics Director Jeramiah Dickey said in the original news release announcing the event.

As it turns out, the school will have to try for a watch party later in the season if it wants to have such an event on The Blue.
