Boise State football coach Danielson completes staff with assistant from Penn State
New Boise State football coach Spencer Danielson completed his first staff Friday by bringing back a former Boise State assistant.
Former special teams coordinator and edge coach Stacy Collins is returning to run Boise State’s special teams, coach linebackers and serve as associate head coach, Boise State announced on Monday. Collins spent the past two seasons as special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Penn State.
He first joined the staff at Boise State in January 2021 after five seasons at Utah State, where he coached defensive backs, linebackers and running backs, and also spent time as co-defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator. He left Boise State in January 2022 and was replaced as edge coach by former Boise State player Jabril Frazier.
“To have someone with the level of expertise and experience as Stacy Collins want to come back to Boise State is truly a blessing,” Danielson said in a statement. “Stacy is one of the best special teams coaches that I have ever come across and an elite linebackers coach. He does an amazing job of developing young men on and off the field and the amount that he cares about his players is second to none. I’m incredibly excited to get to work with him again.”
Collins is expected to sign a two-year contract that will pay him $350,000 a year, according to his material time sheet. The deal, which is subject to approval by the Idaho State Board of Education, also includes a $15,000 signing bonus and $15,000 to cover moving expenses. He made $225,000 at Boise State in 2021.
Under Collins’ tutelage, Boise State kicker Jonah Dalmas set the Broncos’ single-season record with 26 field goals in 2021. Dalmas also owns the program’s record with 80 career field goals, and he announced last week that he’s coming back for his fifth season.
Collins will also work with Boise State punter James Ferguson-Reynolds, who led the country with an average of 49.7 yards per punt last season.
“My family and I are so excited to get back to Boise State and the Treasure Valley,” Collins said in a statement. “We know how special of a place it is and what can be achieved there, which is why I’m proud to Bleed Blue! I am really looking forward to continuing building off the momentum from last season. It is an honor to be able to work under the leadership of Spencer Danielson and Jeremiah Dickey. I am so fortunate to have maintained relationships with players and staff on the team from my time there and I cannot wait to get back to work with them.”
Collins, 48, has also coached at Portland State (special teams), Central Washington (special teams, defensive line, linebackers), Southern Oregon (defensive coordinator), Idaho State (linebackers), Western Washington (linebackers, special teams), South Dakota School of Mines (defensive coordinator, safeties) and Western Oregon (linebackers). He spent four seasons as the head coach at South Dakota School of Mines.
He is the final addition to Danielson’s full-time staff, which also includes Bush Hamdan (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks), James Montgomery (running backs), Matt Miller (wide receivers), Nate Potter (tight ends/co-OC), Tim Keane (offensive line), Erik Chinander (defensive coordinator/defensive line), Tyler Stockton (safeties/co-DC), Demario Warren (cornerbacks) and Frazier (edge).
