Here’s how much Boise State will pay new football coach. Assistant salary pool gets bump
Boise State and new football coach Spencer Danielson have agreed on a five-year contract worth $6.5 million, according to the term sheet that Boise State released late Monday.
The contract, which is subject to approval from the Idaho State Board of Education, will pay Danielson a base salary of $1.1 million in year one and increase by $100,000 every year, eventually paying him $1.5 million in year five.
Former Boise State football coach Andy Avalos’ base salary was $1.55 million this year.
Danielson’s contract also comes with a $35,000 signing bonus, a $300,000 retention bonus if he’s still in the job in April 2027 and a $200,000 bonus if he’s still employed by Boise State in February 2029.
Danielson would receive 70% of his remaining base salary in the contract if he is dismissed for convenience by Boise State. There is also offset language, which reduces the buyout cost by any salary the coach receives from a new job.
The buyout for Danielson to terminate the contract for convenience is $2.5 million through Feb. 28, 2026. That number drops to $1.5 million for the next year and $500,000 for the final two years.
The deal also includes a salary pool of $2.5 million for 10 full-time assistants. Avalos’ contract started with just a $2.1 million assistant salary pool that increased by $50,000 every year.
Boise State announced Danielson as its 12th head coach in program history on Sunday. He was named the Broncos’ interim coach after Avalos was fired on Nov. 12.
Danielson went 3-0 as the Broncos’ interim coach, including a 44-20 win over UNLV in the Mountain West championship game on Saturday. He became the first interim coach to lead his team to a conference championship in NCAA history.
Danielson’s contract as defensive coordinator paid him $425,000 this year, making him the highest-paid assistant coach all-time at Boise State.
