Boise State announces 8 ‘super seniors’ returning for extra season of eligibility
The Boise State football team announced Tuesday that eight players will return in 2023 as so-called super seniors.
Linebacker DJ Schramm, edge rusher Demitri Washington, defensive end Cortez Hogans Jr., offensive linemen Garrett Curran and Cade Beresford, wide receivers Billy Bowens and Stefan Cobbs, and tight end Riley Smith will be back on The Blue this year.
They’re the latest seniors taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility the NCAA offered players because of the impact COVID-19 had on the shortened, disrupted 2020 season. Cobbs, Smith and Beresford previously announced their plans to return.
Running back George Holani is also coming back after he posted 1,157 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground last season, but he won’t be a super senior. He will be a redshirt senior and have the option of returning for another year.
Schramm earned a starting role at weakside linebacker last season as a fifth-year senior. He earned second-team All-Mountain West honors after leading the Broncos with 107 tackles. He started all 14 games and posted more than 10 tackles in five, including a career-high 16 against UTEP.
Washington was healthy enough to take part in spring and fall camps in their entirety for the first time in his career last year. He missed the 2019 offseason while recovering from injuries and missed most of the 2020 season after suffering a torn ACL in the second game of the year. He missed spring ball and was limited in fall camp while recovering in 2021.
The 6-foot-3, 270-pound native of Solana Beach, California, posted 34 tackles and 4.5 sacks last season until he suffered a shoulder injury against BYU in early November. He missed the rest of the regular season but returned for a few snaps in the Mountain West championship game against Fresno State in early December, adding one more tackle to his final tally.
Hogans joined the Broncos last year after he spent three seasons at Northern Illinois and one at Snow College. The sixth-year senior missed seven games with a foot injury. He posted 18 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss in the seven games he played in.
Beresford joined the Broncos after he spent three seasons at Washington State. He started 13 games at right tackle and was named second-team All-Mountain West.
Curran started 11 games at left guard last season. He has started 27 of the 42 games he has played in since 2019.
Bowens finished No. 2 on the team last season with 32 catches for 462 yards. His four receiving touchdowns tied Latrell Caples and Eric McAlister for the most on the team.
Cobbs was slowed by injuries last season, but he played in 12 games and finished No. 3 on the team with 29 catches for 396 yards and hauled in two touchdowns.
Smith, a former quarterback, played in 11 games last season and posted career highs with 25 catches for 214 yards and caught one touchdown. He has played in 39 games and started 26 since 2019.
