Want to sport your favorite Boise State player’s number? Now you can thanks to NIL deal
Boise State football fans can sport their favorite players’ jersey number this year.
For a limited time, fans can purchase jersey T-shirts that include an individual player’s name and number, just as they appear on the jerseys the Broncos wear on game day.
Shirts range from $27.50 to $37.50, depending on size, and players receive a 20% royalty from each sale. Orders will be refunded if a minimum of 25 shirts aren’t sold for an individual player, according to Boise State.
Orders can be placed at broncoshop.com and must be in by midnight Wednesday. Soccer and volleyball shirts also are on sale.
Boise State also sold jersey shirts for the men’s and women’s basketball teams this past winter. The teams combined to sell 765 shirts, according to a spokesperson for the athletic department.
Players are allowed to monetize their name, image and likeness after the NCAA passed temporary legislation in July 2021 just as NIL laws went into effect in several states. Idaho does not have any NIL law on the books.
Boise State is able to sell merchandise that includes the Broncos’ logo because of an optional program for athletes that allows the athletic department’s in-house agency to act as their representative while seeking out NIL deals and include players in group licensing deals.
The first Boise State football player to use the Broncos’ logo in an advertisement was tight end Riley Smith, who wore his jersey while shooting a commercial for Lithia Ford on the blue turf in Albertsons Stadium in April.
Smith’s compensation: a year’s lease of a Ford F-150 pickup truck that he only has to pay taxes on, according to Boise State.
Other players have launched their own clothing line, including safety JL Skinner, whose brand debuted in July.
