Former Boise State QB Kellen Moore was finalist for Miami Dolphins job. Did he get it?

Kellen Moore is staying in Dallas for now.

The former Boise State quarterback, who has been the Cowboys offensive coordinator since 2019, was in Miami on Saturday for a second interview for the Dolphins head coaching vacancy. But the Dolphins went in another direction and hired San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, the team announced on Sunday.

McDaniel will replace Brian Flores, who was fired last month after three seasons with the Dolphins, after they finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs this season.

Moore, 33, also interviewed for Jacksonville’s and Denver’s head coach openings, and he was mentioned as a candidate in Minnesota’s search. He was a top candidate in Philadelphia last year.

Moore is still on the market, though, and seemingly will stay with the Cowboys now.

The Jaguars hired former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson as Urban Meyer’s replacement on Friday. Denver hired former Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett last week, and the Vikings appear close to hiring Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, but an announcement isn’t expected until after the Super Bowl.

The Saints and Texans are both still searching for a new head coach, but Moore hasn’t been publicly connected to either vacancy.

Moore began his NFL coaching career as the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach in 2018. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2019, and Dallas went on to rank No. 1 in the NFL with 431.5 yards a game and No. 2 with 296.9 passing yards per contest. The team led the league again during the 2021 regular season, averaging 407 yards a game.

Moore was a candidate to take over at Boise State when former head coach Bryan Harsin left for Auburn following the 2020 season, but he took himself out of the running after signing a three-year contract extension with the Cowboys in January 2021.

After stints as a backup quarterback for the Lions and Cowboys, Moore’s playing career ended in 2017, and he joined the Dallas coaching staff the following season.

The native of Prosser, Washington, still holds program records at Boise State for career touchdown passes (142), passing yards (14,667), completions (1,157) and attempts (1,658), and his 50 career victories are the most by any quarterback in NCAA history. He ranks No. 2 in NCAA history in career touchdown passes, behind former Houston quarterback Case Keenum.
