Boise State adds cornerbacks coach who spent the past six seasons as a head coach
Boise State football coach Andy Avalos’ staff is complete once again.
Former Southern Utah head coach Demario Warren has joined the Broncos as cornerbacks coach, Boise State announced on Wednesday. He replaces Jeron Johnson, who stepped down unexpectedly last week.
Warren spent the past 14 seasons at Southern Utah, including six as head coach. He led the Thunderbirds to their second Big Sky Conference championship in school history and the program’s third all-time appearance in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in 2017.
“Demario has gained outstanding experience as an assistant, a coordinator and a head coach, has built outstanding relationships as a recruiter in our region and has a proven track record of building young men of character,” Avalos said in a statement. “I am excited to add him to our staff and welcome him to Bronco Nation.”
Southern Utah finished the 2017 season ranked No. 13 in the FCS Coaches Poll and No. 14 in the STATS FCS Top 25 — the highest rankings in school history. Warren was named AFCA Region 5 Coach of the Year and Co-Coach of the Year in the Big Sky Conference following the season. He also coached defensive backs for the Thunderbirds from 2008 to 2013 and was defensive coordinator in 2014 and 2015.
In 2016, Warren’s first season as head coach, Southern Utah led the Big Sky with 20 interceptions. He amassed a 21-42 record as head coach at Southern Utah. He and the program agreed to part ways last November after the Thunderbirds finished the season 1-10 and 0-8 in the Big Sky.
“I am excited to join the Boise State family, and I am appreciative of coach Avalos providing this opportunity,” Warren said in a statement. “This program has a great tradition, and has been built with great people. I am looking forward to getting to work.”
