Boise State dips into Texas to add second defensive back to 2021 recruiting class

The Boise State football team picked up a verbal commitment from 2021 cornerback Oye Adeyi over the weekend.

Adeyi announced his decision Sunday evening on Twitter.

He’s a three-star recruit, according to 247Sports, and he’s coming out of Mansfield Legacy High School in Mansfield, Texas, which is the same program that produced former Boise State offensive lineman Rees Odhiambo (2011-15).

Adeyi chose the Broncos over 16 scholarship offers from Division I teams, including Rice, Princeton and Mountain West schools Wyoming, Nevada and Air Force.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pounder is the second defensive back to join the Broncos’ class in a little more than a week, following Seyi Oladipo, a safety from Colorado, who announced his commitment on Oct. 9.

Boise State made the secondary a focus of its 2020 recruiting class, signing six defensive backs. The move may pay off sooner than expected this fall after safeties Jordan Happle (Oregon) and D’Andre Pierce (Arizona State) were lost to the transfer portal and Kekoa Nawahine to graduation.

Cornerbacks Jalen Walker and Avery Williams, nickel Kekaula Kaniho and safety Evan Tyler are all seniors this season. The NCAA decided to offer all players an extra year of eligibility because of COVID-19, though. If they all decide to return, freshmen coming in with the 2021 class may have a longer wait to see the field.
