Boise State coaches will take furloughs; Broncos’ football game at Marshall rescheduled
Boise State coaches will be required to take furloughs as the university deals with funding shortfalls due to the coronavirus pandemic.
University President Marlene Tromp emailed faculty and staff about the furloughs on Monday, saying events that have been canceled stretching into summer have contributed to nearly $10 million in losses. A university spokesman confirmed Monday night that coaches are included in the furloughs.
Per the school’s announcement, all employees who are paid more than $40,000 a year are required to take furloughs.
The majority of Boise State’s football coaches make more than $150,000 annually and will fall into the highest tier of furlough days at 10. Recently hired running backs coach Winston Venable will be required to take seven days. Furloughed employees aren’t allowed to perform any work when they’re off.
Football coach Bryan Harsin’s base salary is $1.65 million this year. Men’s basketball coach Leon Rice’s base was $705,292 in 2019, and women’s basketball coach Gordy Presnell’s was $242,128. They all fall into the highest tier of required furloughs, while baseball coach Gary Van Tol ($81,438) will have to take five days.
Two weeks of salary for Harsin is about $63,000.
A contract doesn’t make employees exempt from furloughs, according to FAQs posted by Boise State.
“Contracts are issued ‘subject to’ the State Board of Education’s policies and procedures,” the document says. “Employees may have their salaries reduced through furlough or work hour adjustments as provided for in Section II.B. of Idaho State Board Governing Policies and Procedures.”
Marshall game rescheduled
The Boise State football team’s matchup at Marshall has been moved up a day to Friday, Sept. 25, Conference USA announced on Tuesday. Kickoff time and television broadcast information are to be announced.
Games are often moved to Friday to fulfill a request by TV networks, but no official announcement has been made by Conference USA’s main broadcast partner, CBS Sports Network.
The Broncos held on to beat the Thundering Herd 14-7 last season in Boise. Marshall finished the year 8-5 after a 48-25 loss to UCF in the Gasparilla Bowl.
