Former Boise State players sign new NFL contracts; NCAA extends recruiting dead period

Two former Boise State football players signed new NFL contracts in the past week.

On Wednesday, former Boise State linebacker Kamalei Correa re-signed with the Tennessee Titans. Last season, Correa and the Titans made it to the AFC Championship Game where they fell to eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City.

Correa’s new deal is for one year and $3.5 million, according to NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero. He finished last season with seven sacks, two of which came in the playoffs. The 25-year-old was picked in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens and was traded to the Titans in 2018.

On Monday, the Los Angeles Rams re-signed former Boise State cornerback Donte Deayon, who spent most of last season on the practice squad before appearing in three games. He finished with three tackles, and his new contract is for one year.

At Boise State, Deayon was a three-time second-team All-Mountain West pick, and with 17 career interceptions, he finished No. 3 all-time in the conference’s record books and No. 5 in Boise State’s. The 26-year-old went undrafted in 2016 and signed as a free agent with the New York Giants before joining the Rams in 2018.

The Seattle Seahawks also signed former University of Idaho pass rusher Benson Mayowa on Wednesday. He posted seven sacks last season for the Raiders.

NCAA extends dead period

Recruiting got a little more complicated on Wednesday as the NCAA extended its dead period for all Division I and II athletic programs through May 31. All recruiting was previously shut down through April 15.

The ban applies to on- and off-campus in-person recruiting and will be felt most by the Broncos’ football and basketball teams, which will lose visits scheduled by key recruits this spring.

Boise State football coach Bryan Harsin said on multiple occasions that the Broncos are still in the market to add players this offseason at quarterback, running back, tight end, offensive line and defensive back.

Harsin said last week that his players were prepared to return to campus on March 29, but their return was pushed back until at least early April.

Muhlenhaupt named All-American

Boise State missed out on hosting the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference championships after the NCAA canceled all remaining winter and spring championships in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus, but four Broncos earned postseason accolades.

Junior Emily Muhlenhaupt was named a regular-season first-team All-American on bars by the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association. She is the fifth individual in program history to earn first-team accolades, and the third to do so on bars, following Julie Wagner (1995) and Krystine Jacobsen (2016).

She finished the 2020 season tied for No. 4 nationally with a national qualifying score of 9.945. Only Kyla Ross (9.975; UCLA), Maddie Karr (Denver; 9.960) and Maggie Nichols (Oklahoma; 9.960) recorded a higher NQS this year.

Muhlenhaupt recorded a 9.9 or higher in eight of her nine bars routines, including 9.975 twice, which matched her career high and tied the Boise State and MRGC records. She was also named the Mountain Rim’s Bars Specialist of the Year and first-team all-conference.

Redshirt junior Maddi Nilson was named second-team all-conference on bars, and junior Gabriela Bouza was named the conference’s Vault Co-Specialist of the Year. She shared the honor with BYU’s Sadie Miner and Southern Utah’s Madison McBride, each of whom finished the season with an NQS of 9.850.

Senior Isabella Amado was named second-team all-conference on beam.
