Boise State baseball sparks winning streak; Broncos collect payday in series at Texas
The Boise State baseball team is officially on its first winning streak in almost 40 years.
After winning their first home game since 1980 on Friday, the Broncos (3-3) swept Northern Colorado (2-8) in a doubleheader Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Boise State won the first game in walk-off fashion after second baseman Christian Padilla singled to right field in the 10th inning to give the Broncos a 5-4 victory. It was his third base hit of the day, and the Eagle native drove in three RBIs.
Junior Mitch Lines got the start on the mound and went five innings, striking out five batters and giving up seven hits and two runs. He gave way to Northern Colorado transfer Gavin Gorrell, who went two innings, struck out three and gave up two hits and one run.
Redshirt senior Cameron Sommer also struck out three and gave up one run and one hit over the final three innings to earn his first win at Boise State.
In the second game, the Broncos’ bats came to life with 13 base hits in a 12-9 victory. Freshmen Reagan Doss and Torin Montgomery both connected on home runs. It was the first of Montgomery’s career, and he finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Doss homered at Texas to record Boise State’s first run since 1980.
Freshman pitcher Hunter Omlid replaced starter Stu Flesland in the fourth inning and earned the win with nine strikeouts in four innings of work.
Baseball gets 10K from Texas
Boise State’s baseball team opened the season last weekend with three straight losses at Texas, but the Broncos left Disch-Falk Field with more than the experience of their first opening night.
According to documents obtained by the Idaho Statesman, Texas guaranteed Boise State $10,000 for the three-game series. That’s a stark contrast to the $800,000 Oregon will pay Boise State’s football team for a game in Eugene, Oregon, in 2026.
The baseball team has a few more games with guaranteed payouts on the horizon, according to Boise State coach Gary Van Tol.
Van Tol said the Broncos will get a $10,000 guarantee next season for a three-game series at Arizona State, and a $5,000 payout for a one-game trip to Arizona. He also said Boise State has scheduled a home-and-home series with UConn and future games at Oregon State. Dates and financial information were not available.
