Boise State sandwiched between Memphis and Cincinnati in race for major bowl berth

The Boise State football team jumped Cincinnati but is still trailing Group of Five contender Memphis in the race for a New Year’s Six bowl bid.

The Broncos moved up one spot to No. 19 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, which were released Tuesday. After a win over Cincinnati on Friday, Memphis remained at No. 17 while the Bearcats fell to No. 20.

Cincinnati (10-2) travels to Memphis (11-1) on Saturday for the American Athletic Conference championship game. If the Bearcats beat the Tigers and Boise State beats Hawaii in the Mountain West title game (2 p.m., ESPN), the Broncos will have the inside track on the New Year’s Six bid. If Memphis wins, it likely will be the Tigers heading to the Cotton Bowl. The New Year’s Six bid goes to the highest-ranked Group of Five conference champion in Sunday’s final CFP ranking of the season.

Two more teams from the Group of Five are in the CFP’s top 25. Appalachian State (11-1) is No. 21 and Navy (9-2), which was eliminated from AAC title contention last week, is No. 24.
