Ex-Boise State linebacker Joe Martarano continues yo-yo summer with Cubs

Fruitland native Joe Martarano is certainly earning his frequent flyer miles this summer.

The Chicago Cubs promoted the former Boise State linebacker back to their Low-A affiliate in South Bend, Ind., on Friday, sending Martarano to the club for the second time this summer.

Martarano began his first season as a full-time professional baseball player with the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League. The Cubs promoted him to South Bend on July 1, sent him back to Eugene on July 8, then returned him to South Bend after three games in Eugene.

Martarano, who left the Boise State football team in March, hit .340 in 15 games in Eugene and .167 in seven games during his first stint in South Bend.

He went 1-for-4 Friday night in his return to the full-season level.
