Key Boise State basketball transfer out indefinitely with ‘significant’ injury

Boise State men’s basketball transfer Ty Rodgers — expected to be a big part of the upcoming season — has been sidelined indefinitely after sustaining a “significant lower-body injury” last week during a team-sanctioned workout, Boise State announced on Monday morning.

Rodgers underwent successful surgery to repair the issue, according to the team statement, and will be sidelined from all basketball-related activities for an “indefinite period of time.”

A more definite timeline for his return will come when he begins rehabilitation, Boise State basketball spokesperson Jordan Beasley told the Idaho Statesman.

Further details on the injury were not provided.

Rodgers was the cherry on top of an active spring for the Broncos, confirming his commitment to the program on May 8.

The 6-foot-6 guard was a key figure in the Illinois run to the Elite Eight in 2023-24, starting all 38 games and averaging 6.2 points and 5.3 rebounds. However, he’s missed the entirety of the past two seasons through a combination of a redshirt season and then a torn patella tendon in his left knee.

While not a high-level scorer, he shot 52.7% shooting in his sophomore season and has the potential to add a huge defensive presence for the Broncos.

“He’s the guy you count on day in and day out; he can do everything,” Boise State head coach Leon Rice said last week. “He can guard five positions, the highest of character, the greatest work ethic.”

New assistant coach Max Rice also described Rodgers as a “unique player” who’s going to be “very special” for the program.
