All-Mountain West teams announced. That means Boise State’s Degenhart is honored again

Three Boise State basketball players earned honors Tuesday morning as the All-Mountain West awards were announced ahead of the conference tournament.

Senior forward Tyson Degenhart was selected to the all-conference first team yet again, senior guard Alvaro Cardenas to the second team, and junior forward Javan Buchanan was named the conference’s Sixth Man of the Year.

Degenhart became the first Bronco to feature on the first team three times, having also been selected in 2023 and ‘24. He’s the third Boise State player with three all-conference selections, alongside Chris Childs (1988-90) and Tanoka Beard (1991-93), both of whom managed the feat in the Big Sky.

Degenhart is also just the second player in Mountain West history to be selected to the first team for three straight years, joining BYU’s Jimmer Fredette from 2009-11.

Degenhart has started all 31 games for Boise State this season, averaging 17.8 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 51.7% from the field. He’s also 32 points away from surpassing Beard for the most points in program history, a feat he’ll be hoping to achieve at the Mountain West Tournament this week.

Cardenas enjoyed one of the best playmaking seasons ever seen in a Boise State uniform en route to his first-ever all-conference selection. Cardenas ranks 8th in the nation with 213 assists, averaging 6.9 per game, and claimed the Boise State single-season assist record earlier this year.

The Spanish-born guard played for San Jose State for three years before transferring to Boise State for his senior season. He has 585 career assists and is looking to become just the fourth player in conference history to record 600.

He’s also averaging 12 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

Buchanan is just the third Bronco to be recognized as Sixth Man of the Year, which awards the league’s best player who comes off the bench. Mike Sanor collected the honor in 1988 in the Big Sky, while Alex Hobbs won the award in 2018 in the Mountain West.

Buchanan has made just two starts this season but averages 22 minutes and 9.7 points per game. He’s scored in double digits on 17 occasions and managed two games of at least 20 points.

Buchanan is just one of eight players in the league to have recorded at least 300 points, 100 field goals and 20 blocks, and he’s the only player on that list not to be a regular starter.
