With starting center Mladen Armus off to the professional ranks, the Boise State men’s basketball team was in need of some depth inside.

The Broncos found what they were looking for in the transfer portal.

Mohamed Sylla, a transfer from Detroit Mercy, signed with the Broncos on Monday, according to a news release. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-11, 235-pound senior is a native of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. He joins the Broncos after playing one season with the Titans. Boise State now has three players who stand 6-10 or taller in Sylla, senior Lukas Milner and junior Burke Smith.

Sylla appeared in just 10 games for Detroit Mercy, averaging 1.5 points and 0.7 rebounds. He missed the Titans’ first few games while awaiting clearance from the NCAA after spending his first two seasons at Florida Southwestern. A spokesperson for Detroit Mercy said that an injury did not contribute to his limited playing time in 2021-22.

At Florida Southwestern, Sylla played in 36 games with 16 starts over two seasons, averaging 3.8 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 63% from the floor.

Sylla attended Putnam Science Academy — a prep school in Putnam, Connecticut — where he averaged 5.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in his only season.

Boise State has added four players to its roster this offseason. Joining Sylla are standout Sadraque Nganga from AZ Compass Prep in Chandler, Arizona; Texas Tech transfer Chibuzo Agbo; and walk-on Kade Rice, the youngest son of Boise State head coach Leon Rice.

Redshirt senior Marcus Shaver Jr. also announced that he would return for his extra season of eligibility granted by the NCAA because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Broncos lost starters Abu Kigab and Mladen Armus to the professional ranks, while Emmanuel Akot transferred to Memphis.
