Boise State senior declares for NBA Draft, but leaves door open to return to Broncos
One of the most clutch shooters in Boise State history has declared for the 2022 NBA Draft.
Redshirt senior guard Marcus Shaver Jr. announced on social media Thursday evening that he will test the pro waters while maintaining his final year of eligibility.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, all college players were granted an extra year of eligibility, which means Shaver could return to Boise State for the 2022-23 season.
“Thank you to the coaches, staff and the athletic department for the countless hours of preparation and belief in me,” Shaver wrote. “I will always carry that winning mentality everywhere I go.”
This past season, Shaver made a 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds of four separate games that either tied the score or gave Boise State the lead.
His heroics started with a game-winning triple with 1.4 seconds left at Utah State on Jan. 20. Two days later, he hit a go-ahead shot with 30 seconds remaining at San Diego State.
The following week he sank a 3-pointer with 1 second to go to force overtime in an eventual win over Fresno State. Shaver then nailed a step-back triple from the top of the arc with 8.3 seconds on the clock to force overtime against Colorado State on Feb. 13.
Shaver wrapped up the 2021-22 season averaging 13.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
Shaver is the first of four Boise State seniors to declare his intentions after a standout season that saw the Broncos set the program record for overall wins (27), conference wins (15) and consecutive victories (14). The Broncos also made their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015 after winning both the Mountain West regular-season and tournament championships. They lost in the first round to Memphis.
Fifth-year senior Abu Kigab is out of eligibility, while Emmanuel Akot and Mladen Armus have not yet said whether they will return for an additional season with the Broncos.
