Treasure Valley golfers finish 1-2 in U.S. Open local qualifying

Ty Travis (Eagle High/Boise State) earned medalist honors in U.S. Open local qualifying Sunday at TimberStone Golf Course, and Eagle senior Josh Gliege shot a 2-under 70 the day before the 5A state tournament to earn a U.S. Open sectional qualifying berth. Travis shot a 4-under 68 for the first of three spots into sectionals, and Nick Mandell of Kennewick, Wash., was third at 71. Ten 36-hole sectional qualifiers will be played nationwide June 6, with the closest at Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, Wash.

BSU TRACK AND FIELD: David Elliott (14:06.70) and Brenna Peloquin (16:05.99) won the men’s and women’s 5,000 meters, respectively, at the Mountain West Championships on Saturday in Clovis, Calif. Elliott, who took his fourth career MW title, also was second in the men’s 1,500, and Fernando Martinez was runner-up in the 400 hurdles. Peloquin became the first freshman in conference history to win the event. The Bronco men finished fifth with 85 1/2 points, and the women were eighth with 39 1/2.
