Idaho colleges roundup (March 19): Boise State wrestler eighth at nationals

Geordan Martinez finished his All-American season with a 5-1 loss to Justin Oliver of Central Michigan in the 149-pound seventh-place match at the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. Martinez, a sophomore and two-time Pac-12 champion, was 4-3 as the No. 12 seed in the national tournament to finish 32-8 this season. His other losses were to third-place Lavion Mayes of Missouri and sixth-place Alec Pantaleo of Michigan. The Broncos scored six team points, placing 43rd of 72 schools. Penn State won its fifth championship in six years with two individual champions and 123 points.

BSU SWIMMING: The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Sam Wicks, Brittany Aoyama, Emma Chard and Katelyn Martin finished 22nd at the NCAA Championships in Atlanta, matching the Broncos’ best finish of the meet. Georgia won the team championship with 414 points, beating Stanford by 19 and Cal by 56.

BSU MEN’S GOLF: Kyle Mitsunaga (Boise High) and Tristan Rohrbaugh shot 4-under 68s in the final round, and the Broncos placed 15th at the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz. Boise State’s 9-under round Saturday was its lowest since 2010.

BSU MEN’S TENNIS: The Broncos (9-8) lost their Mountain West opener to Utah State 4-3 in Logan. Thomas Tenreiro (No. 2), Kyle Butters (No. 4) and Abe Hewko (No. 6) earned singles victories.

BSU SOFTBALL: The Broncos (7-20) lost to Georgia Southern 12-9 and Texas Tech 6-5 in Lubbock, Texas.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE TRACK AND FIELD: Ellie Logan set the school javelin record (146 feet, 4 1/4 inches) in her collegiate debut, ranking seventh in NCAA Division II and leading the Crusaders to a second-place finish at the Eastern Oregon Team Challenge in Hermiston, Ore. The College of Idaho was third.

NNU BASEBALL: The Crusaders (13-9, 8-4 GNAC) swept Western Oregon in Portland, winning 3-2 and 4-2.

NNU SOFTBALL: The Crusaders (11-12, 5-5 GNAC) split a doubleheader with Central Washington in Nampa, winning 2-1 and losing 3-1.

COLLEGE OF IDAHO BASEBALL: The Yotes (21-7, 9-3 NAIA West) swept British Columbia in Caldwell, winning 8-2 and 4-3.

C OF I SOFTBALL: The Yotes (6-7-1, 3-3 Cascade) split with Eastern Oregon in La Grande, winning 7-6 in 10 innings and losing 10-0 in five.

C OF I WOMEN’S TENNIS: The Yotes (3-6) lost to Lewis-Clark State 9-0 at the Boas Tennis Center in Boise.

IDAHO WOMEN’S TENNIS: The Vandals (10-7, 4-2 Big Sky) lost 4-3 at Sacramento State.

IDAHO STATE MEN’S TENNIS: The Bengals (4-8, 2-3 Big Sky) lost 5-2 to Northern Arizona in Pocatello.
