Idaho colleges (March 18): Boise State wrestler is All-American; gymnasts host conference finals
Sophomore 149-pounder Geordan Martinez reached the consolation quarterfinals of the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Friday at Madison Square Garden to become Boise State’s 31st All-American wrestler.
Martinez, the No. 12 seed, beat Oregon State’s Joey Delgado, Oklahoma’s Davion Jeffries and Nebraska’s Jake Sueflohn by decision on the second day before falling to No. 3 seed Lavion Mayes of Missouri 5-1. He’ll meet Central Michigan’s Justin Oliver for seventh place Saturday.
BSU senior Chris Castillo (157) ended his tournament 1-2 after a 14-2 loss to No. 2 seed Thomas Gantt of N.C. State.
BSU SWIMMING: Brittany Aoyama led the Broncos’ individual efforts with a 29th-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly at the NCAA Championships in Atlanta. Sam Wicks was 31st in the 100 backstroke, and Emma Chard finished 36th in the 200 freestyle. The 200 medley relay team of Wicks, Chard, Aoyama and Katelyn Martin was 22nd. The 400 freestyle relay team will compete in preliminaries starting at 8 a.m. Saturday at atlantaswimming.com/Webcast.
Bronco gymnasts host conference finals
BOISE — No. 15 Boise State will host the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference championships at 6 p.m. Saturday at Taco Bell Arena. Boise State (12-0) is the only undefeated team in the nation. The Broncos will vie with Southern Utah, BYU and Utah State as they aim to repeat as MRGC champs. Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for juniors and seniors, and free for students. They will be available at the arena box office or via BroncoSports.com/tickets. It also will be streamed online at BroncoSports.com/videos.
BSU SOFTBALL: The Broncos (7-18) lost to Texas Tech 8-1 and beat Georgia Southern 13-5 at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock, Texas.
BSU WOMEN’S TENNIS: The Broncos (6-7) swept Lewis-Clark State 7-0 at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center in Boise without dropping a set.
BSU MEN’S GOLF: The Broncos are tied for 15th after two rounds at the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz.
NORTHWEST NAZARENE BASEBALL: The Crusaders (11-9, 6-4 GNAC) split with Western Oregon in Portland, losing 6-1 and winning 5-3.
NNU SOFTBALL: The Crusaders (10-11, 4-4 GNAC) split with Central Washington in Nampa, winning 5-4 and losing 8-0.
