Idaho athletic director, Boise State volleyball coach get new deals

The State Board of Education approved new contracts Thursday for Idaho Athletic Director Rob Spear and Boise State volleyball coach Shawn Garus.

Spear, the Vandals’ athletic director since 2003, was given a four-year extension with an annual base salary of $181,958.40, with $25,000 possible in bonuses. His deal was set to expire in August. Idaho compared Spear’s salary to others in the Sun Belt and Big Sky.

It listed the salaries of seven Sun Belt ADs whose schools have football, and Spear’s is sixth. Of the nine Big Sky schools listed that play basketball in the league, Spear’s is third.

Garus was given a two-year deal that runs through January 2018, which will pay him a base salary of $100,000 annually — a raise of $12,390 per year from his first contract, which began in February 2015.
