Idaho colleges roundup: Boise State women can’t hold off Fresno State rally

The Broncos built an 11-point halftime lead but couldn’t hold off a surging Fresno State, falling 62-57 in women’s basketball action Saturday. The Bulldogs (8-6, 3-2 Mountain West) outscored BSU 39-23 in the second half. Brooke Pahukoa led the Broncos (8-6, 1-2) with 27 points and nine rebounds, and Miquelle Askew added 10 points. Fresno State featured four players in double figures.

IDAHO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The Vandals fell behind early in the second half and couldn’t fight their way back, falling to Eastern Washington 74-66 in Moscow. Idaho (10-5, 2-1 Big Sky) cut the lead to four several times, but each time EWU (9-6, 3-0) answered. Mikayla Ferenz led Idaho with 18 points, while Christina Salvatore added 14.

U OF I MEN’S BASKETBALL: Austin McBroom scored 26 points, sinking six from long range, and Eastern Washington coasted to a win over Idaho in Cheney, Wash. Felix Von Hofe added 19 points and Julian Harrell had 14 for Eastern Washington (7-8, 1-2 Big Sky), which hit 53 percent of its 47 shots from the field and 15 of 29 from 3-point range. Victor Sanders led Idaho (10-6, 2-1) with 18 points.

IDAHO STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The Bengals clawed their way back from an 11-point deficit but fell short in a 45-42 road loss to North Dakota. A 3-pointer by Isabel Vara de Rey cut the lead to 43-42, but North Dakota’s (5-10, 1-3 Big Sky) defense held. Rey led ISU (7-7, 0-3 Big Sky) with 13 points.

ISU MEN’S BASKETBALL: Quinton Hooker scored 24 points, Corey Baldwin 22 and Carson Shanks 16 as North Dakota beat Idaho State in Pocatello. The Fighting Hawks (7-8, 2-2 Big Sky) shot a blistering 59.6 percent from the field, including 50 percent from 3-point range. North Dakota also outrebounded the Bengals 38-27. Ethan Telfair scored a career-high 37 to lead Idaho State (6-9, 1-2).

COLLEGE OF IDAHO MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Coyotes pulled away in the second half to beat Warner Pacific 87-76 on the road. Aitor Zubizarreta led the C of I (10-6, 5-2 Cascade) with 21 points, and Joey Nebeker (Mebla High) added 19. Taylor Young led Warner Pacific (10-6, 6-2) with 17.

C OF I WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: A cold shooting second half doomed the Coyotes, and the C of I fell on the road to Warner Pacific 84-65. Petra Lumpert led the C of I (4-10, 3-5 CCC) with 17 points, while Jacin Tini added 16. The Coyotes shot 31 percent in the second half after shooting 40 percent in the first. Warner Pacific (11-3, 6-2) featured four starters in double figures.

C OF I SWIMMING: The men beat Pacific 146-94, while the No. 6 women rolled to a 183-68 victory at West Boise YMCA. Thomas Sheridan won two events and hit an NCAA qualifying mark to lead the men. Maddy Kelly won two individual events and swam in two winning relays for the women, who won 13-of-14 events.

NORTHWEST NAZARENE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The Crusaders lost to Simon Fraser 90-73 in Burnaby, British Columbia. McKenna Walker led NNU (5-6, 3-3 GNAC) with 13 points. Simon Fraser (5-6, 3-3) had five players in double figures.
