Why would Albertsons Stadium need blue dirt? So BSU can host a unique event

Albertsons Stadium will swap its blue turf for some blue dirt next summer: Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live is headed to Boise.

Boise State announced Friday morning that it would be hosting the monster truck tour on June 6, 2026. It will be the first time Albertsons Stadium has hosted an event of this kind, and it will also be the first time for the Hot Wheels tour in an outdoor stadium in the United States.

“This is an important moment for us,” Boise State Athletic Director Jeramiah Dickey said Friday, standing in front of a newly unveiled blue monster truck adorned with bright orange flames for the Broncos.

“We need to continue to drive more events to The Blue. We are the front porch of Idaho; we have an economic value to this community, and we’re going to continue to do this as much as we possibly can.”

Friday morning’s announcement was the second in a 24-hour time frame for odd upcoming events at Albertsons Stadium. On Thursday evening, ESPN announced that Banana Ball would be coming to the venue next summer.

Alongside major concerts at Albertsons Stadium, such as Post Malone a few months ago, the two events are part of a larger effort by Boise State to use the stadium as an additional revenue stream outside of football season.

“This was a bucket that we had not done enough in as an institution, as a department,” Dickey said. “And that’s a big reason Nate (Burk) and our collective team ... we’ve empowered them and said, ‘Go.’”

What can fans expect from the Hot Wheels show?

Fans will get to watch 14 Hot Wheels monster trucks, including fan favorites such as Bigfoot, Mega Wrex and Tiger Shark. There will also be seven freestyle motocross riders and two fire-breathing robots. The two robots, Arcticgon and Megasauraus, are as large as the monster trucks, which primarily stand between 12 and 15 feet tall.

Nick Shane, vice president of booking for Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live, said people attending the Boise show will be in for an extra-special treat because the number of trucks and motocross riders is double what a typical show would have.

While Hot Wheels has put on shows at outdoor venues elsewhere in the world, it’s performed solely in arenas in the U.S.. The space at Albertsons Stadium will allow the trucks and stunt-riders more room to perform, Shane said.

Don’t worry — the monster trucks won’t be ripping up the blue turf. Boise State plans to replace the surface ahead of the 2026 football season, making next summer the perfect time to dye some dirt blue in the stadium — yes, they plan to do that — for the Hot Wheels show.

Fans also will have the chance to name the new Boise State-themed monster truck. Enter the contest on Boise State’s website until Oct. 24 at 5 p.m., and the winner will be announced on Nov. 22. The winner will receive four tickets and four VIP passes to the show, as well as four tickets to the Boise State vs. Colorado State football game on Nov. 22.

Tickets go on sale on Saturday at 10 a.m. at hotwheelsmonstertruckslive.com.
