TWO-TIME CHAMP RETURNS TO FIREBIRD Reigning NHRA world champion Tony Bartone, above, of Long Island City, N.Y., is No. 1 in the NHRA Top Fuel standings and has won back-to-back Pepsi Nightfire titles. Bartone is also Firebird Raceway’s track record holder at 267.37 mph. Pro qualifying for the 45th annual Nightfire Nationals begins at 7 p.m. Friday. Competition continues through Sunday with a purse topping $185,000. There will be nightly exhibition runs from Ed “Outlaw” Jones in his wheelstanding Stage Coach, and the 280 mph “Warped Speed” and “Warhawk” Jet Funny Cars.

What: 45th annual Pepsi Nightfire Nationals, NHRA Hot Rod Heritage points event featuring AA/Funny Cars, Top Fuel, AA/Fuel Altereds and more than 400 sportsman racers from 14 states and Canada

When: Gates open at 8 a.m. each day. Sportsman racing starts at noon (Friday), 11 a.m. (Saturday) and 10:30 a.m. (Sunday). Pro qualifying begins at 7 p.m. (Friday), 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. (Saturday) and 2 p.m. (Sunday).

Admission: $20 (Friday), $30 (Saturday) and $25 (Sunday) for adults, $5 children ages 6-12 and free for 5 and younger

Location: Five miles north of Highway 44 on Highway 16, about 10 minutes northwest of Eagle
