Slow year expected for Idaho in MLB draft

Baseball America doesn’t rank a player from Idaho in its top 500 prospects, and Perfect Game ranks one — Lewis-Clark State shortstop Cabe Reiten — in its top 500.

The MLB Draft starts at 5 p.m. Thursday on MLB Network with the first and second rounds. The next rounds follow Friday (3-10) and Saturday (11-40) with streaming on MLB.com.

Nine players with Idaho ties were drafted last season, but only one in the top 500 — former Coeur d’Alene High pitcher Drew Turbin (14th round, Baltimore Orioles).

The Colorado Rockies, the parent club of the Boise Hawks, own the fourth overall pick. But Colorado hasn’t sent its top pick to the short-season A, Northwest League since 2008.

The Philadelphia Phillies have the first pick.
