Two-time Olympic gold medalist and defending national champion Kristin Armstrong finished third Friday, less than one month before selections for the Rio Olympics later this summer.

Carmen Small covered the 20-mile course in 42 minutes, 32 seconds, beating Amber Neben by 22.70 seconds and Armstrong by 1:08.56.

“The humidity was really hard for me today, and so my body just didn’t cool. I gave it everything I had, but it wasn’t my day,” said Armstrong, who won Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012. “The good news is it was not Rio today. ... This is going to make me go back and really think about what I need to do before Rio, but I feel confident still.”

The Rio roster will be finalized June 24.
