The seven-year-old track record in AA/Funny Car was bested three times during Saturday’s qualifying at the NAPA Auto Parts Ignitor Nitro Opener at Firebird Raceway.

Claiming the pole and the elapsed time record was reigning NHRA World Champion Steven Densham of Bellflower, Calif. He drove into a 30-mph headwind and unleashed a 5.72-second elapsed time at 248.39 mph.

The old mark was held by No. 2 qualifier Ryan Hodgson, who ran 5.75 and a new track speed record of 251.67 mph.

The Funny Car field ended up with a bump spot (No. 8) of 6.000 recorded by Don Hudson of Atascadero, Calif., which was the quickest field in the 49-year history of Firebird.

Final sportsman eliminations kick off at 9 a.m. Sunday, while the first round of AA/Funny Car is at 1 p.m. Adult pit-side admission is $20, while kids 15 and younger are free. Firebird is located 5 miles north of Hwy 44 on Hwy 16 northwest of Eagle.
