Salt Lake City skier wins first U.S. title in Sun Valley
Brennan Rubie, 24, led off the U.S. Alpine Championships on Tuesday by winning the men’s super combined by nearly 1 1/2 seconds.
Rubie was second to British skier Jack Gower in the super G portion, an official FIS race, and third in the slalom portion to finish in 2 minutes, 1.76 seconds. Kieffer Christianson of Anchorage, Alaska, was 1.46 seconds back in second, and third-place Hig Roberts of Steamboat Springs, Colo., was 2.24 off the pace after winning the slalom.
Twenty-one skiers failed to finish the super G, including World Cup regulars Steven Nyman and Tim Jitloff.
Tuesday’s race was the first-ever standalone alpine combined race at the U.S. Alpine Championships, according to the U.S. Ski Team.
Competition continues Wednesday with the women’s alpine combined.
