Mountain West media unanimously picks Marks player of the year, Rice top coach

Media members that cover the 11 Mountain West men's basketball teams announced their 2014-15 All-Mountain West men's basketball team and individual awards Sunday.

The primary beat writers that cover MW men's basketball came up with their top three teams, along with Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Man and Coach of the Year.

The voting panel comprised of beat writers and others at media outlets familiar with the teams. The top 15 players were selected, with the top five vote-getters making the first team, the second five making second team and third five making third team.

Conference-only games were used in determining the all-conference teams and individual awards.

Boise State senior guard Derrick Marks was the unanimous Player of the Year. Marks averaged a league-best 21.3 points per game.

Boise State, which won the regular-season MW championship, won two other individual awards as redshirt sophomore forward James Webb III was named the Newcomer of the Year and Leon Rice the Coach of the Year.

Other First Team members included Wyoming senior forward Larry Nance Jr., Colorado State senior forward J.J. Avila, UNLV sophomore post Christian Wood ad Fresno State junior guard Marvelle Harris.

San Diego State junior center Skylar Spencer was the Defensive Player of the Year and Colorado State sophomore guard John Gillon was voted as the league's Sixth Man.

The league's coaches decided before this season not to include media as part of its postseason awards, as had been the case in the past. Their awards will be announced Tuesday.
