Did Christian Pulisic Suffer Injury In U.S. Win vs. Paraguay?
The U.S. men's national team made a statement on Friday night, kicking off their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 4-1 win over Paraguay.
Although there were plenty of nerves heading into the opening match, the USMNT came out with a level of intensity that American soccer fans haven't seen before. Christian Pulisic reminded people why he earned the nickname "Captain America," knifing through Paraguay's defense to force an own goal in the first seven minutes. He then set up Folarin Balogun for a beautiful goal in the 31st minute.
Unfortunately, Pulisic was subbed off for the second half of action against Paraguay. While fans enjoyed the team's 4-1 beatdown they were understandably concerned about the star winger's health.
USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed on Friday night that Pulisic felt a "kick" in his calf at the end of the first half. That's why he wasn't back on the pitch for the final 45 minutes of action.
"He received a kick before today (too) in a training session, we hope it's not a big issue," Pochettino said. "When he finished the first half, he could not walk. We're hopeful the next game he'll be available."
What's the latest on Pulisic?
With the U.S. set to face Australia on June 19, it's too tough to say if Pulisic will be ready for that match. However, he's trying his best to stay upbeat.
"I just got a bit of a kick in the first half, I'm hoping that it's nothing, taking precaution," Pulisic told FOX's Tom Rinaldi. "Staying positive, I don't think it's anything."
Pulisic added, "I'm gonna give everything I can to be back, that's for sure."
If Pulisic is unable to suit up against Australia, the U.S. will need Folarin Balogun, Sergino Dest, Weston McKinnie and Malik Tillman to step up.
