Steve Kerr Answers Questions About His Future After Play-In Exit
The Golden State Warriors saw their 2025-26 season end at the hands of the Phoenix Suns last night, and the organization heads into a period of uncertainty they haven't had in a while. Among the biggest questions is what the future holds for four-time NBA championship coach Steve Kerr.
Officially, Kerr's contract has now expired. The team did not give him an extension beyond this season and by his own admission he doesn't know what the future holds. He acknowledged that all jobs have an "expiration date" and that new blood and ideas are sometimes needed. Kerr expressed gratitude to everyone who has been a part of the Warriors since he took over the team in 2014.
"We'll talk about what's next for the Warriors, what the plan is this offseason," Kerr said after the 111-96 loss, via Fox. "And we will come to a collaborative decision on what's next.
"I don't know what's going to happen. I still love coaching. But I get it. These jobs all have an expiration date. There's a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it's time for new blood and new ideas and all that.
"And, if that's the case, then I will be just nothing but grateful for the most amazing opportunity any person could have to coach this franchise in front of our fans in the Bay and to coach Steph Curry, to coach [Draymond Green] and the whole group."
The Future and The Past
Kerr expressed to his own players that he doesn't know what the future holds for him with the Warriors.
"I don't know what's gonna happen next, but I love you guys," Kerr told his players in a moment with them after the game.
Kerr also made it clear that he doesn't want to have to coach somewhere else if he isn't working with Steph Curry.
"I don't want to walk away from Steph. I'm definitely not going and coaching somewhere else next year in the NBA. I would never walk away from Steph," he said.
"But all this stuff has to be aligned and right. Those are all discussions that will be had."
In 12 seasons with the Warriors, Kerr won four NBA titles and reached the NBA Finals two more times. The 2015-16 season saw the Warriors set an NBA record with 73 wins, only to lose to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Finals.
Across his tenure with the Warriors, Kerr went 604-353 in the regular season and 104-48 in the playoffs. His only two losing seasons were this year and the "bubble" 2019-20 season.
Have we seen the last of Kerr on an NBA sideline?
