AREA ROUNDUP: Pullman boys golf claims first place at Liberty Lake, Greyhound girls second

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. - Amid the rain and the wind, the Pullman boys golf team persevered, claiming a first-place team finish at the Washington Class 2A Greater Spokane League event at the MeadowWood Golf Course with a 345 on Wednesday.

Pullman's Brandon Brown scored an 85 overall for sixth place and Milo Wexler and Kareem Kariuki tied for seventh each with 86.

The Pullman girls turned in a runner-up score of 422, led by Belle Brinkman's 99 for third place and Alanis Bobo's 102 for fourth place.

Clarkston's Enzo Bergamo produced the highest finish among the local boys, firing an 83 for fifth place.

"While most teams might struggle to enjoy those conditions, our group embraced it and even had some fun competing in it," Pullman boys coach Eric Martin said. "We did a really nice job adjusting our expectations and playing smart, focusing on keeping the ball in play and controlling what we could. The effort and energy never dropped, even when things got tough, which says a lot about this group."

Asotin throwers, Colfax's McNeilly show out at league meet

ROCKFORD, Wash. - The Asotin Panthers recorded five individual event victories, while the Colfax Bulldogs recorded three individual event victories at the Northeast 2B League Meet No. 1 hosted by Freeman High School.

Asotin throwers Elias Lopez, who was first first in boys shot put and discus with throws of 41 feet, 10.5 inches and 127-8, respectively, and Hannah Appleford, who was first in girls shot put and second in discus with marks of 38-1.5 and 96-3, respectively, led the way for the Panthers.

Colfax's Brayden McNeilly ran the first leg of the boys 400 relay first-place squad and won the long jump with a leap of 18-3.

Team scores were not listed as of press time.

ASOTIN - The Maniacs used a four-run fourth inning to get ahead and stay ahead in an interstate matchup.

Sady Olive struck out four in 3 2/3 innings to start opposite of Asotin's Georgia Schaefer who went the seven inning distance, while reaching base twice and accounting for an RBI and a run.

Maddy Waters doubled while Paige Deyo and Rachael Province accounted for two RBI each.

Orofino (9-1) held off a late Asotin (1-10) surge in the seventh inning to win.

Lewiston 7, Lake City 5

The Bengals beat Lake City of Coeur d'Alene in between spurts of rain.

Lewiston's mixed doubles pairing of Alexis Keller and Brennan Rice dominated at the net. Bengals coach Sandi Stocks said that the group showed their power at the net in a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Stocks said that River Hoover showed poise in adjusting to her opponent en route to a 6-4, 6-1 win.

Although she ultimately lost, Lewiston's Eliza Pfaff nearly worked her way all the way back from a 5-2 deficit to lose 7-5.

Caleb Potratz and Dylan Smith took care of business in singles action as Lewiston improved to 5-1 overall.

The Pullman boys and girls 2A Greater Spokane League duals scheduled for Wednesday against Rogers of Spokane were postponed due to inclement weather.

A makeup date has not yet been confirmed.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Utah Tech 18, Washington State 8

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Utah Tech's six extra-base hits, which included a home run and triple from Kyle McDaniel, were too much for Washington State to handle in a mercy-rule-shortened nonleague loss that snapped its five-game winning streak.

Gavin Roy hit a two-run home run and Kyler Northrop had a two-run double to provide the bright spots for WSU (19-18). Utah Tech improved to 23-14.

It was a forgettable first-career start for WSU pitcher Erik Rodriguez, who walked four, allowed four earned runs and took the loss.

Vandals wrap Bobcat Desert Classic

GOODYEAR, Ariz., - The Idaho Vandals finished in 10th place with a 50 over at the Bobcat Desert Classic.

Lucy Newell turned in a Vandal-best 8-over par to tie for 26th place.
