One of the most decorated goalkeepers in U.S. men’s soccer history will join the ownership group of Boise’s upcoming pro soccer team.
AC Boise announced Kasey Keller as a new minority owner in its USL League One club Tuesday morning. Keller played in four World Cups for the U.S. and played internationally in England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga and Germany’s Bundesliga.
Keller, 56, remains a full-time commentator for ESPN but has owned a home at Tamarack Resort near McCall for the past 20 years.
“I always felt a little bit guilty when I retired and went into broadcasting,” Keller said during Tuesday’s press conference. “I kind of had this experience that very few, if any, American players have had at the level that I was fortunate enough to be a part of for so many years.
“I always felt that there was something to give back. That I could be a good sounding board, a good — for lack of a better word — consultant for what I saw in the rest of the world and help us catch up with those things.”
AC Boise CEO Brad Stith said Keller made it clear he plans to roll up his sleeves and help the new club get off the ground. AC Boise will play its first game in March as part of the third division of American men’s soccer in a renovated stadium at the former Les Bois horse racing track.
It has already secured nearly 5,500 season ticket deposits, putting AC Boise on pace to break the USL record. A women’s team will follow in September 2027.
“You see it all the time where celebrity owners throw their name on a press release, and that’s the last that you hear from their involvement,” Stith said. “Kasey made it crystal clear from the beginning that he wanted to make an impact. … That meant a ton to us.”
Keller’s playing days saw him rack up 102 appearances for the U.S. men’s national team. A three-time U.S. Soccer player of the year, he still stands as the country’s all-time leader in shutouts (47) and he ranks second in U.S. history in wins (53).
The Olympia, Washington, native retired in 2011 before moving into the broadcast booth.
“Kasey is just one more piece of the puzzle,” said Jeremy Fishbein, the vice president of soccer for AC Boise. “You have an experienced footballer who’s played all over the world, is intelligent, competitive, opinionated. This is an opportunity to kind of walk the talk.”
Keller still lives full time in Seattle but said ESPN plans to build him a home studio in Tamarack, allowing him to spend more time in Idaho. He joins an ownership group that includes Stith, Steve Patterson, David Wali and Bill Taylor.
“I’ll be doing more and more work out of Valley County, which gives me more and more access down to Boise and with the group,” Keller said. “One thing that I thought was pretty cool is the ownership group has a lot of homes in Valley County, so we can have maybe some good leadership meetings on a ski slope in the winter.”
