Tommy Gainey — known during his PGA Tour career as “Two Gloves” — shot a 9-under-par 62 on Thursday at Hillcrest Country Club to take the first-round lead in the Albertsons Boise Open.

Gainey, who has a win on the PGA Tour and three on the Korn Ferry Tour in his career, entered the tournament 21st in the Korn Ferry Tour points standings. His nickname came from his unusual habit of wearing gloves on both hands.

He turned 45 on Thursday.

“I’ve had some great rounds in my career on my birthday in the past, but none as low as 62,” Gainey said in a press release. “My last few tournaments I’ve gotten off to really bad starts, like always bogeying the first hole. On No. 10 today, my first hole, I hit it to about 12 feet and made the putt for birdie. When you go from a bogey start to a birdie start, right away you’ve got momentum built.”

Charlie Saxon (63) and Brett Stegmaier (64) were Gainey’s nearest competitors. The four-round event continues Friday, with no fans in attendance because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
