Idaho State suspends voluntary workouts after an athlete tests positive for COVID-19
Idaho State announced Tuesday morning that one athlete has tested positive for COVID-19 and all on-campus training has been suspended pending further testing.
The athlete is at home with mild symptoms, according to Tuesday’s press release. The university declined to identify the athlete or which sport he or she plays, but it did say any athletes or coaches deemed to have been directly exposed have also been advised to self isolate.
Idaho State is also awaiting the test results of additional probable cases, per the release.
“I am not willing to risk the well-being of our students, and we are prepared to be patient and ensure a safe environment,” Idaho State Athletic Director Pauline Thiros said in the release. “Every decision we make will place the highest priority on the health of our students.”
On June 20, Idaho State announced it tested 115 athletes, coaches and staff members with no positive results.
Idaho State officials said Tuesday that the athletic department will continue to test athletes as they arrive on campus, become symptomatic or are exposed to an infected individual.
“Idaho State was prepared for positive test results, and we immediately put our plans into action,” Thiros said.
