Runner’s low: Race to Robie Creek scratched over coronavirus. ‘We are heartbroken.’

The 43rd annual Race to Robie Creek half marathon joined an ever-growing list of sporting events that will not go on as scheduled this spring because of concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

The Rocky Canyon Sail Toads, the race’s organizing committee, made the announcement on Facebook on Friday afternoon. It was unclear whether the race would be postponed or canceled.

“In light of the direction recently given by government agencies and the nature, size, and logistics of our particular event, the Race to Robie Creek will not be held on April 18, 2020,” the post reads. “We are heartbroken but believe this is the best decision for our community, participants, volunteers, staff, sponsors, and everyone involved. We have and always will strive to put on the very best event we can. The health and safety of the community and everyone involved in our event is our top priority.

“We will be meeting in the coming week to decide how best to proceed and will update everyone as soon as possible.”

Robie has earned a reputation as one of the most grueling half marathons in the Northwest, challenging participants over a 13.1-mile course that begins at Fort Boise Park and ends at Robie Creek Park. Runners must endure an elevation climb of 2,072 up Rocky Canyon Road to Aldape Summitt.

“We understand the impact this decision has on our participants, sponsors, charities, and volunteers,” the statement continues. “We want to express our deep and sincere appreciation and thanks to all of our sponsors, community partners, participants, volunteers, spectators, and everyone involved in the race for your understanding and support of the Race to Robie Creek.”

Youth soccer: Idaho Youth Soccer has suspended league games through March 30, the association announced Friday. Practices may continue.
