Playing Outdoors: The wackiest event at McCall Winter Carnival — the dog pull

Idahoans love their dogs, the snow and the outdoors — so might as well combine the three for a little fun.

The 10th annual MCPAWS Winter Carnival Monster Dog Pull is at 11 a.m. Sunday at Alpine Village in McCall. Dogs in various weight classes will race while pulling a weighted sled. The top three in each division receive a prize. About 80-100 dogs usually participate.

These are not professionals. Anyone can sign up their dog for $15. Early registration is from noon to 3 p.m. Friday at the MCPAWS Regional Animal Shelter in McCall. Same-day registration begins at 10:45 a.m.

Want to know if the dogs take it seriously? Just look at the eyes on the dog pictured above.

Other contenders for wackiest Winter Carnival event: snowshoe golf, the vertical challenge (skin up the mountain, ski down it, as many times as you can in an hour) and snow bike races (like motorcycles, but for snow).
