This popular Boise trail is closed for repairs. Here’s how long until you can hike it

A popular Boise trail will be closed for a month as crews work to repair damage from heavy use, according to a Facebook post from Ridge to Rivers, the organization that manages Boise’s trail system.

Harrison Hollow Trail, a heavily used route in the Hillside to Hollow Reserve in the North End, closed Tuesday and will reopen in mid-October, Ridge to Rivers officials said. The trail begins at the trailhead behind Healthwise west of Bogus Basin Road. The trailhead and other trails in the reserve will remain open.

“Ten years of ever-increasing use has taken a substantial toll on the trail,” Ridge to Rivers said in its post. “This past winter, it contained areas of mud and standing water that should not have been walked on, let alone biked on. ”

The mile-long trail is popular with hikers, mountain bikers and pet owners — Ridge to Rivers describes it as a “mecca for dogs.”

Ridge to Rivers said the Land Trust of the Treasure Valley will recrown the trail, a process that involves layering and compacting gravel to create stable soil and drainage. The Land Trust of the Treasure Valley is a nonprofit that works to preserve open space and helped secure the reserve in the early 2010s.

The trail was graded and graveled in 2012 to create an all-weather trail that can be used in winter months, when Boise’s clay-heavy soils are prone to erosion. Ridge to Rivers said with the new repairs, Boise will have “a true all-weather trail.”
