The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has a big job. Sustaining quality fishing opportunities, enforcing the rules and conducting fisheries science are just a few of the roles Fish and Game plays across our vast state. Striving to act in the best interests of both anglers and our natural resources is a lot to balance, and I respect the effort.

One thing Fish and Game does a particularly good job of is providing useful online resources. Their website has really leveled up in recent years, giving users a great set of tools for planning successful fishing trips. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Idaho Fishing Planner. This trove of information can tell you virtually anything you want to know about public waterways in the Gem State. Simply type in the name of your target fishery and you can find out what species live there, what has been stocked (and when), any special regulations that apply, and more! I have used this tool countless times, and it usually steers me toward success, especially when exploring new waters.

  • Angler Guide. This tool provides a high-level view of what species live in the most popular fisheries of each of the seven Idaho regions, along with useful angler access information.

  • Record Fish. Fish and Game runs a cool record program, with both certified weight and catch-and-release options available. If you think you might have caught a new state record, you can look it up on the spot (cell service required).

  • Fish Stocking. This tool allows anglers to look at what has been historically stocked in a fishery. It also provides an upcoming stocking schedule if you are looking to get the kids out on some freshly-stocked hatchery rainbows.

  • Fishing Seasons and Rules. This is the online version of the printed pamphlet available in tackle shops. Download the PDF so that you always have a copy available on your phone.

These tools are great items to have in your knowledge tackle box. Happy planning, and tight lines!
