Fishing

As fall approaches, it’s last call for fishing Idaho’s alpine lakes. Here’s what to know

Fishing on a picturesque lake high in Idaho’s mountain wilderness is one of the most unique angling experiences the Gem State has to offer. And as we turn the page on a long, hot summer, now is the perfect time to plan one last alpine adventure.

September in the mountains is great because it’s still warm enough to fish in comfort (pack layers, though, especially if you are camping — the nights and mornings are chilly!) and the fish are hungry as they prepare for the long, cold winter ahead. With school back in session, there are fewer folks out, too. If you’re willing to hike a couple miles, there’s a good chance you’ll have a lake to yourself.

My friend Mark and I recently fished a mountain lake in the McCall area and had an awesome day catching beautiful westslope cutthroat trout, which are a staple in many alpine fisheries (rainbow, brook, bull and golden trout are also possible). The trek required a bumpy truck ride on forest service roads and a steep hike, but it was well worth it.

We packed in float tubes so we could fish the entire lake, as shore access is often limited. We caught fish on grasshopper and leech patterns, spinners and Rapalas. Most of our catches were 14-to-18-inch trout, which is an absolute blast on ultralight fly and spinning tackle. It was a little bit smoky out, but otherwise, it was a perfect day!

Only a few weeks of alpine fishing remain for 2022. Let’s get out and enjoy it while we can! Tight lines!
