Catch a steelhead in the Boise River! Here’s where to find them.
In what is becoming a favorite tradition for many local anglers, Idaho Fish and Game has released more than 200 steelhead into the Boise River over the past few weeks. The fish, which generally range from 24 to 30 inches, were released at locations between the Glenwood Bridge and Barber Park, giving anglers a chance to catch a big, anadromous rainbow trout without making a long road trip.
As is usually the case, Boise River steelhead are difficult to catch. But they will bite on a variety of lures and baits including spinners, jigs, streamers, crankbaits and roe. The river can get crowded at times — dozens often gather at the stocking points on the days the fish arrive. Please be courteous to your fellow anglers out there!
Special rules apply for steelhead fishing in the Boise River, and they differ from regulations on other rivers. Anglers may keep two steelhead per day (they are all hatchery fish with a clipped adipose fin), and barbless hooks are not required, but a steelhead permit is. Visit the IDFG website for more info on steelhead fishing.
