Sawtooth Salmon Festival: Kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday at the Stanley Community Center, Idaho 21, with a presentation by Outdoor Idaho and Idaho Public Television’s host Bruce Reichert. Continues Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Stanley Museum, with free shuttle tours throughout the day to view wild salmon spawning; educational booths; salmon experts; food and drink; and a salmon dinner with music ($40 general, $30 for SIHA or IRU members). Sunday, Sept. 11

Jordan’s Ride: Late registration at 7 a.m. with start of first ride at 7:30 a.m. at Eagle Sports Complex, 12000 Horseshoe Bend Road, Garden City. Distances include 10, 30, 50, 100 and 105 miles. Benefit bicycle ride to raise funds for Inland Northwest SIDS Foundation and The SUDC Foundation. $35 individual, $25 children 15 and younger. jordansride.org.

Intro to Geologic Mapping: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Idaho Museum of Mining and Geology, 2455 Old Penitentiary Road, Boise. Learn the principles of geology, rock unit identification and description. Includes a moderate hike to Castle Rock while mapping the local geology of the area. Facilitated by Josh Ekhoff and Amanda Laib, Boise State University. Rock Party: Noon to 4:30 p.m. at the Idaho Museum of Mining and Geology, 2455 Old Penitentiary Road, Boise. Activity stations for kids covering Idaho mining history, fossils and geology. Each child takes home a certificate and a free rock; easy hillside geo hikes, gold panning, geode-cracking and more. $4 general, $2 children 5-17, free for ages 4 and younger and museum members. 283-3186, idahomuseum.org.

Saturday, Sept. 24

Exploring Idaho Volcanism: Brittany Brand, volcanology professor at Boise State University, will lead a trip to Guffey Butte near Celebration Park to observe a maar volcano. Register at the WinCo parking lot on Meridian Road at I-84 at 7:30 a.m. with an 8 a.m. departure. West Valley folks can register at Celebration Park between 8:45 and 9 a.m. Bring lunch, lots of water and dress for the weather. Return to Boise by 5 p.m. Approx. three-mile moderate hike.
